Custom Bag Dimensions and Tolerance Guide
A nominal width, height and depth are not enough when fit, compartments, closures or retail packing depend on the finished shape.
Define the requirement before production
Soft bags flex with fabric, padding, seam allowance and filling state. Buyers can reduce disputes by defining where each dimension starts and ends, how the sample is positioned and which measurements are critical to function.
Separate product fit from outside dimensions
List the items the bag must hold and any minimum usable opening, internal clearance or compartment size. Outside measurements alone can hide space consumed by padding, bindings, seam turnings and zipper construction.
For fitted products, mark the critical contact points and access path. A cosmetic bottle, brush, device or gift set may require a different internal check from the overall finished size.
Draw consistent measurement points
Add a diagram showing the start and end point for width, height, depth, gusset, strap drop and opening. State whether curves, bindings, handles or protruding parts are included.
Define whether the bag is measured flat, naturally filled, lightly tensioned or placed on a level surface. Use the same method for the approved sample and production inspection.
Assign tolerance by function and construction
Do not apply one tolerance to every feature. Identify critical-fit dimensions, appearance dimensions and non-critical soft measurements, then agree practical limits for the selected material and construction.
Record the target, permitted variation and measurement method in one table. If a dimension affects a closure, insert, device or retail carton, link the acceptance rule to that function.
Recheck after changes and on packed samples
Measure the production-intent sample after material, padding, zipper, lining or seam changes. A construction change can alter usable space even when the cutting pattern appears unchanged.
Where packing may compress or distort the product, check measurement recovery and carton fit using the proposed presentation and export packing.
BUYER FAQ
Questions to settle in the specification.
Should a soft bag be measured flat or filled?
Use the method that matches the requirement, state it in the specification and apply it consistently to samples and inspection.
Can one tolerance cover every dimension?
Usually not. Critical-fit, functional and appearance dimensions may need different limits based on construction and use.
What should be included in a measurement table?
Include the target, measurement points, product position, method, permitted variation and any linked fit or function check.
